Wide Plank, Hand-Crafted Textured Teak Floors & Decks
Hand-Hewn Floors was created for discriminating designers, owners and builders who are looking for old-world craftsmanship produced with modern technology for quality and cost efficiency.
While wood floors are traditionally flat, our hand-worked textures bring a new dimension to wood flooring. They are not only beautiful but also practically maintenance-free. The inevitable nicks and scratches, which ruin other floors, add beauty and complement our floors’ time-worn look.

Founded by Dennis Linkletter in 1989 after moving to Indonesia, Not So Far East Trading Company was the premier Indonesian antiques and handmade teak furniture store on La Brea Blvd in Los Angeles. In 2003, Dennis shifted his focus to unique teak flooring, establishing Hand Hewn Floors. Our exceptional products quickly caught the attention of commercial designers, especially in hospitality.
Now, after decades of success in the industry, we are excited to extend our handcrafted flooring to residential projects. With a commitment to quality and craftsmanship, we invite homeowners to enjoy the same beautiful designs that have made us a trusted name in hospitality.
We have no dealers, agents, or retailers anywhere. Hand Hewn Floors offers you the opportunity to bypass the middleman and purchase factory-direct from the source in Java, Indonesia. All funds go towards your flooring, not lining middlemen’s pockets.
Factory wholesale to the customer is the only way to market something with the build quality we want and still be a great value. Dennis is available to personally answer any questions you might have about teak flooring, teak decking, or his award-winning Komodo Kamado grills.
Flat wood Is Just Plain, Boring And Unnatural
Our hand-worked floor textures add a new dimension to wood flooring. Specializing in textured wood, nobody does it better. Whether it’s a subtle, anti-slip texture on our decking or our super sexy rain-washed floors, our textures are the result of more than 35 years working with teak. We create the following textures:
- Hand-Hewn—These sculpted floors are individually hand-hewn with a traditional village adze, employing a variety of adze tools and techniques to produce a one-of-a-kind, scalloped design.
- Linear Planed—Modified hand planes give a deep hand-scraped look.
- Rain-Washed Finish – The flooring’s natural appearance is achieved by removing the soft growth rings, which elevate and highlight the harder growth rings. This method accentuates the wood’s natural texture, grain, and the unique character of teak, capturing the essence of time and rain-worn timber.
- Smooth Character-Infused – This floor is expertly crafted using a hand plane against the grain, creating eye-catching tear-outs that lend it an abundance of character. It’s well-suited for high-traffic environments, where nicks and scratches will simply enhance its rustic finish.
- Wood Grain Enhanced – Our exclusive process etches the grain, highlighting its pattern and enhancing its natural beauty.
We are happy to create custom textures.
The Art of Teak Decking
Teak is renowned for its durability and resistance to the elements, but its high cost and short lengths have made it a rare choice for decking—until now. Our innovative approach combines traditional teak glue-lam with meticulously matched end-grain sawn panels from the same log, creating seamless teak decking lengths of up to 3 meters with our innovative Anti-Slip texture. Customize your decking to your project’s exact specifications, reducing waste and eliminating joints for a seamless finish.

Natural Tung Oil -“In” The Wood, Not “On” The Wood
Why Select Tung Oil? Tung Oil is a hard-drying, eco-friendly finish that offers a protective coat while highlighting the natural grain of the wood. Polymerization occurs when it interacts with oxygen, changing it from a monomer to a sturdy polymer and creating a reliable barrier against stains and spills deep within the wood—without any surface finish to scratch off or damage.
In contrast to synthetic (plastic) finishes, oiled floors offer a natural feel underfoot and develop a stunning patina over time. They’re environmentally sustainable, effortless to maintain, and allow for selective refinishing in high-traffic areas, eliminating the need to sand or refinish the entire floor—reducing mess and downtime for both residential and commercial settings. Discover the exceptional beauty and resilience of tung oil finishes for your wooden floors.

Teak: Eco-Friendly And Sustainable
Teak (Tectona Grandis) was introduced to Indonesia by Dutch and Chinese traders over 400 years ago. As a non-native invasive species, harvesting teak trees is regarded as the collection of a cultivated crop, not the cutting of native forests. Teak thrives in dry, well-drained soils and is not found in rainforests.
Our flooring features a three-layer construction of character-grade teak, ensuring precision milling that maximizes yield and minimizes waste. Recycled timbers are also available upon request.
Premium Engineered Teak Floors
Our sawn wide-plank engineered teak floors are textured and treated with polymerized tung oil.
Traditional hardwood floors are typically made of narrow 3-4″ strips due to solid wood’s tendency to expand and contract with seasonal changes and humidity. Wider boards can develop gaps during dry seasons or under forced air heating, or they may cup with fluctuating humidity levels.
To ensure stability in flooring that is 7-8″ wide, cross-lamination or a plywood base is necessary.
Engineered floors often carry a stigma because they’re usually made of plywood topped with a thin layer of hardwood veneer. Our engineered flooring, however, is crafted from three layers of solid-sawn teak planks that are cross-laminated for optimal stability.

Low Maintenance, Cost-Efficient Installation
Polyurethane finished floors cannot be spot-treated. If you have an area damaged by high traffic, you must sand out the whole room/floor, creating a dusty mess, and take the room out of service for days.
Traditional flat floors can only be sanded a few times before they hit the tongue and groove and must be replaced. A textured floorboard finished in tung oil can be cleaned up with Scotchbrite and spot-treated in an hour. No mess, no downtime.
Inevitable scratches, nicks, and dings, which are unsightly on a flat polyurethane-finished floor, actually add to the beauty of the textured floor and are unnoticeable. Textured floors are never a belt sanded and, therefore, never need to be replaced because of sanding through to the tongue and groove.
Engineered floorboards do not warp and twist and do not need to be manually nailed down.. They can be glued to the subfloor, even a cement slab.

Engineered Teak Flooring
Tectona grandis, a tropical hardwood tree species in the family Lamiaceae, is commonly known as teak. While teak is not indigenous to Indonesia, making it an invasive species there, this fact eliminates concerns about its harvest. Teak has a Janka hardness rating of 1,155, placing it between Red Oak and English Oak. Our engineered flooring utilizes three layers of solid-sawn teak boards, kiln-dried to a 6% moisture content to ensure cellular collapse. Each board features tongue and groove joinery on all four sides.
The layers are bonded using melamine low-formaldehyde resin, a glue designed to meet stringent European OSB 3 qualifications, applied with a hot press. The cross-laminated core, combined with expansion joints and Polyethylene (PE) protective foam strips between boards, prevents warping even in flood conditions. Termite control is ensured through Bayer Agenda 25 EC treatment applied to the base and core layers.
For colored flooring, we use a proprietary light walnut, UV-resistant, solid-free aniline dye, with tear-outs dark glazed. The floors are also color-balanced to minimize the contrast between knots and the surrounding wood. Finally, the flooring is finished with impregnated polymerized tung oil and a proprietary light wax for a soft sheen.
Wall Cladding, Boxed Beams And Ceilings
We don’t stop at flooring and decking – our handcrafted teak can also be used for walls, ceilings, and decorative boxed beams. Experience cohesive, timeless design across every surface in your home or project.
